How is your hair handling summer?
So... it is smack dab in the middle of summer. How is your hair handling the sun, sweat, and ponytails?
First, run your hands through your hair.
Was that hard to do that?
If so, then ask yourself these questions...and find out some quick and easy solutions!
1. Have you been outside in direct sunlight?
Did you know that your hair needs sunblock too? Many people don't think about this, but lucky for you most product companies do! Many high end lines now have UVA and UVB protectants in it, so it helps create a shield against the damaging sun.
2. Have you been lounging by the pool all day this summer?
Most of us know that chlorine has an adverse effect on your hair. Basically, it is stripping your hair of all its natural oils...not just your hair, but your skin and nails as well.
3. Surfs up along the coast line.
Salt water, yet not as damaging as chlorine is still sucking the moisture right out of your hair. Think about eating a whole bag of extra salty pretzels....with nothing to wash them down with. You probably have a mental image of your mouth being dry and unpleasant. That is basically what is happening with your hair, it is dehydrating it and making it brittle, dull, and hard to brush through.
4. Sweat sweat sweat
You could be standing completely still and you feel that inevitable drop of sweat starting. Summer and sweat just go hand in hand. Sweat has salt in it; salt drys hair and skin. Sweat likes to build up on the scalp and block the hair follicle from the root. This can damage your hair and scalp health.
5. Ponytails
Bobby pins, elastics, and hairspray...oh my! I am guilty of wearing my hair up often during the summer, but its just too hot not to! Extra tension and elastics onto already dry and brittle hair = damage. There are some ways to keep your hair up without the damage!
The Solutions!
1. The Sun
-Use a product that has a UVA/UVB protectant in it (basically a sunblock for your hair!) My favorite one is the Kerasilk Color Blow-dry Spray.
-Wear a hat or protective head covering
-Use an umbrella/stay in the shade
2. The Pool
-Wet hair down and apply a leave in conditioner before getting into the water.
-Use a clarifying shampoo after you get out of the pool (make sure it is color safe!)
-Wear a swim cap - so, I know this may be the most practical one...but who knows, maybe you can start a trend!
3. The Salt Water
-Use coconut oil before and after you hit the beach. (it is super moisturizing!)
-Braid your hair before you leave for the ocean - keeps your hair from blowing around too much.
-Follow the same rules as the pool.
4. Sweat
-Rinse your hair with cool water after sweating.
-Braid your hair instead of tightly pulling it back, wear a headband...basically play around with different style while working out.
-Use a deep conditioner for your hair type once week (The one below is Kerasilk Control Mask)
5. The Ponytail
-Try different ways of keeping your hair off your neck and out of your face - braids, headbands, knots etc...
- Use a different kind of elastic. Cloth, band ect...
-Use Olaplaex #3 once a week in your hair to strengthen your hair. This is especially important if you have color treated hair!
